Store Bobbi Brown

A beauty brand best known for its natural-looking makeup products

Review of Bobbi Brown

Product range: Makeup and skincare products, just as one would expect from a beauty brand. Bobbi Brown, however, stand out from the competition by quite a line of foundations. It's also nice to have at every beauty counter that features Bobbi Brown in-store Bobbi-trained make-up artists and sales assistants that will help you choose the shades and textures that are right for you, and will offer you complimentary demos on a book-in or walk-in basis - what's even better, enjoying this personalized experience is non-binding.

Even though Bobbi Brown is associated first and foremost with the "greasepaint", its skincare products receive a lot of praise as well. Most notably, the creams. Bobbi Brown markets a comprehensive range of makeup and skincare products from serums, makeup removers, and exfoliators to bronzers, highlighters, and correctors. Add to this a line of fragrances, makeup brushes, and cosmetic bags.

Originality: Bobbie Brown is oftentimes compared to MAC. Both companies are considered prestige beauty brands that are part of the Estée Lauder Companies. However, unlike MAC that cultivates the makeup that guarantees to turn heads and has to remain prominent under artificial lighting during studio shooting, Bobbie Brown favors more natural makeup solutions. The brand invests a lot of effort in developing foundations formulas; lipsticks and eye shadows by Bobbi Brown mostly come in natural shades - retina burning neon fuchsia and vivid hot pink so common at MAC are not available from Bobbi Brown.

Bobbi Brown sales assistants at beauty counters offer free makeup lessons and complimentary demos, which is pretty much in line with the Bobbi's own evangelism: as of now, she has authored eight books that enjoy the status of the "livre de chevet" for thousands of beauty aficionados. Hannah Martin, a leading Bobbie Brown makeup artist who is part of its Pro Team, hosts a cool YouTube channel sharing her tutorials on, for example, a makeup routine for oily skin without resorting to layering tons of powder all over your face.

Bestsellers: Creamy Concealer Kit, Skin Foundation Stick that features a transparent base and skin tone correct pigments, the cult-favorite oil-free Skin Foundation SPF 15, the go-anywhere Bronze Shimmer Brick highlighter that doubles as eye shadows, the powder, and the powder blush, and, finally, the subtle to bold Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner.

Pricing policy: Pricier than MAC. Iconic creamy semi-matte lipsticks cost $29, foundations are $46 on average, while lathering tube soaps cost $34.

Corporate history highlights: Bobby Brown founded her company after dropping out of the University of Wisconsin and the University of Arizona and enrolling in Boston’s Emerson College, where she mastered the basics of theatrical makeup and afterwards worked as a freelance makeup artist at Glamour. The first products released by Bobbi Brown in 1991 were a line of beige-pigmented lipsticks. The line was soon extended to cover yellow-based foundations - Bobbi was quick to notice that most foundations back then available on the market were pink-based while most of the women have yellow undertones to their skin. The brand made it big and in 1995, in a mere four years since its inception, it was acquired by the multinational beauty powerhouse Estée Lauder.
